The project was first comsidered in 1950, when preliminary work was begun on a small scale. The next few years saw the story take shape. In 1954 the project was laid aside for two years, while the Disney staff concentrated on the Disneyland park and the studio's two television series. Work on the Sleeping Beauty resumed in earnest in 1956, and consumed the next three years. By the end of that time the cost of the seventy-five-minute film had mounted to $6 million, making it the most expensive animated cartoon of all time.
The fantastic effort and phenomenal expense do show up on the screen; it is unquestionably Disney's most elaborate cartoon film, the visuals on screen enhanced by the wide-screen Technirama process and the aural stereophonic sound system.
